Venice

I’m not sure about romantic, but overcrowded and smelly definitely come to mind.

I don’t want to burst the bubble of anyone planning a life’s dream holiday of visiting Venice, but for one of Europe’s ‘most romantic cities’ it just really isn’t.

Sure, if your willing to drop a good 50 Euros p/head to sit on the waters edge at a cute little ‘authentic’ Italian restaurant in the evening, while they whip you up a decent batch of Spag Bol served with local wine, then yeah, you’ll definitely have a nice time.
But the day-to-day reality of it is, that the streets are insanely overcrowded, your constantly in a state of being lost, a questionable aroma is permanently hanging in the air, and multitudes of fine young gentleman from the Subcontinent and Africa, line the thorough-fairs selling everything from fake Louis Vuitton to the emergency umbrella.

“It’s Venice, how could it not be romantic though?’

Whatever floats your boat I guess.

I agree. I think you’d be hardpressed to find any major city that wasn’t overcrowded or stinky. Venice is gorgeous. If you need further proof, just look at your own photos above.
And if you want the best view, scoot over to the Peggy Guggenheim museum, walk straight to the balcony, and just sit and stare.

your pictures actually capture what venice looks like throwing aside those overly romantic notions. awesome – don’t get me wrong, the city is nice, but not in some idealized way

I think people should go to murano instead. It’s quieter and still has the canals. It’s my first visit to venice yesterday, and today it was rainy. I wish the queue to go into the cathedrsl wasn’t that ling and i didn’t even get to rialto. Am i a loser?

I couldn’t agree more! Me and my boyfriend took the train from Sweden to Croatia and on our way home we decided to visit Venice. In the middle of July. I actually burned my foot on the ground when I took my flip flop of (can remember why). So hot no winds. And a crowd. We spent more money on one lunch than we did in three days in Split!

But the buildings are nice 🙂
