Backpacking in Iraq.

Leave your misconceptions at the border.

After a hectic trans Syria/Eastern Turkey jaunt, and a day to recover in downtown Dohuk, we start to head East and really begin to see what traveling in Northern Iraq is all about.

Which, surprisingly, is not alot. Shit is tame, and just as safe as anywhere else in the Middle East.
RPGs, Tanks, NATO Airstrikes, nothing. None of it exists.
Forget what you think you know because chances are, you really don’t.

(Lonely Planet Blog Readers – you need to go to my actual website to watch the vids)

Welcome to Sulav. This is as prime as tourist locations in Iraq get..

not for the precious..

As a photographer, and typically an analogue one at that, I don’t really experiment in Video much.. Enter, Fernando. Spaniard Video Blogger Extraordinaire come Iraqi Travel Counterpart.
Who eventual got me on the other side of the lens, (ok, there wasn’t that much coercing required, I’ll talk shit with the best of them), but what you see is all off-the-cuff, no retakes, and 2nd tries, just raw haphazard video blogging.
Which brings me to shout out kudos to his, very much more polished entries. Check out his version of our Iraq here and more vids from his also epic trip here. They are seriously great.

Fernando, my cameraman, and the beginnings of waay to much lunch.

Little smart-ass kids run the Middle East. Thats all there is to it.

More soon (now that I’m back to civilization and using youtube is not a punishable crime)..
